Turning an Existing Kids’ Playroom into a High-end Theater

WHO:
Wanting to use specific materials and color variations, we worked very closely with the client to ensure that their vision became a reality without compromising the AV aspect of the room.

PROJECT GOAL:
The theater was to provide ample seating for family and friends, while also having a rustic look which used specific materials that the client wanted to incorporate into the space.  The client’s vision was to use the room to primarily watch movies with the family. The client also wanted an additional space for the children and adults to eat, drink, and socialize before and during the entertainment, thus creating a separate area attached to the theater room that was open to viewing.

RESULT:

The completed theater provides the client and their young children with all of the amenities of a true cinema experience, including a candy case, popcorn machine, refrigerator, comfortable theater-style seating, and 3D capabilities.   One of the most notable elements of this room is the stone wall with recessed lighting in the gathering/concession area, making this theater a one-of-a-kind.

The finished product exemplifies Encore’s ability to maximize a client’s space and produce an outstanding theater room that the whole family can enjoy.

Patel Residence

The primary objective for this client family was to turn an underutilized builder-grade basement into an extraordinary home cinema/multipurpose space while maintaining an "open" feel. The clients did not want a dedicated room just for watching movies, as they have a large extended family. Instead, they envisioned an open space that utilized part of the basement for movie watching plus much, much more.

While it required a design that created the feel of a Home Cinema, the area is also utilized as a full Kitchen (including a Wine Rack, Tasting Area, and a table that seats four). One of the other objectives in designing the space was to have a ski-lodge feel, something very different from the more colonial décor in the remainder of the home. A real space within which they could truly get away!

Altogether, the clients wanted to be "wowed" and have the feeling of being completely immersed into the viewing experience as a result of the quality audio and video performance we were to provide.

The original layout was not conducive to the initial design, so Encore removed the basement Kitchen completely and relocated it. This provided us with the framed walls in which to create a dedicated AV closet with much-needed space to house the electronics and lighting control system.

We recessed the front screen wall, framing it with a double 2x6 wall, giving us room to install the Pro Audio Technology Speakers, Baffle Wings /Treatments, and two very large 15" Subwoofers. The back of the room included an open area, which we opted to utilize for a third row of seating, onto which we framed soffits to house lighting, added automated shades, and crafted two oak beams.

The client also requested a lounge feeling to the side of the room, so a custom-made table was elevated on the first riser to provide additional seating opportunities. The finishing touch, was the entrance to the room, which originally was a wide opening; we enclosed it and installed a one-of-a-kind custom Barn Door.

The finished room includes a 138" 2:35.1 Vutec Vision X automated vertical masking screen, twelve zones of Crestron centralized lighting and two automated Crestron blackout shades. Custom acoustic panels (TAD, hybrid, diffusers, & absorbers) were used with tracking and stretched fabric. Custom oak beams were added in the center of the room for that "lodge" feeling, along with stained oak trim and the surrounding baseboard. This project is truly unique in that is also features a Pro Audio Technology speaker system capable of Dolby Atmos playback with a total of thirteen speakers.

The room features three tiers of seating with fifteen United Leather custom-suede electronic chairs. The room also features a custom-made TEAK table that seats an additional six. Comfortably seating 26 people at capacity, everyone has an amazing sight line to the screen.

The entire space is open and all viewers can see the screen including the Kitchen area, which is an outstanding space in its own right. The build features custom tile, stone walls and backsplash with all the appliances required to make for a one-of-a-kind basement Kitchen (Ice Maker, Wine & Can Fridge, Sink and Dishwasher). Wood pallets were repurposed to construct a Wine Rack that holds 124 bottles. Like it, all the counter tops were custom made by our firm with stained Oak and 10 coats of polyurethane to ensure a lasting shine.

Above the wine rack, the wall is stone with pockets featuring LED wax candles controlled by the Crestron lighting system, adding a "wow" factor to the overall space and ambiance. The Crestron Gesture-Driven app allows the room to be controlled from an iPad, while we used two Lighting Keypads for individual control when the Media Room is not in use.

We took what was the old Kitchen space and turned it into a dedicated AV closet with cooling. This room features two 43U space Middle Atlantic Racks that are freestanding in the middle of the room. What is amazing about the design is that someone can walk around either side of the rack and see no exposed wires, giving this installation an amazing and extremely clean look while adding to sevicability. We also used a Sony 4K projector, with a Crestron DM system with sources such as Cable, AppleTV, Kaleidoscope, and a Karaoke machine.

Lastly (although previously mentioned), our firm incorporated a custom Barn Door so entering the room really gives the family a sense of entering a lodge. When closed, you feel as if you have just been transported to Jackson Hole, Wyoming or Aspen, Colorado.

We designed the acoustics of the room with the help of Media Environments, giving us a predetermined level of performance by strategically locating and using certain acoustic properties throughout the room. We used proprietary software called XTZ callaorbrating tool to set up parameters such as SPL and other frequency changes determined by the software's generation tool and mic. After stabilizing the system, we then used Pro Audio's Software for the speakers to correct any unbalanced curves that we did not like, mainly in the 40-6Hz region. After completing this intensive two-day calibration, the room's frequency response is very even with little-to-no spikes or dips. The video calibration was performed with a test DVD and used ISF Standards.

We feel this space is noteworthy when you consider that this was an open space not remotely designed to function as a Home Cinema. We were able to maintain the access function of the room while providing the look and feel of an isolated screening space and giving the client the ski-lodge look and feel they requested. The completed build demonstrates that our clients can request a home theater of virtually any look in any space, and we can (and will) accommodate.

Large Family Requires a Super User-friendly Theater

WHO:
Client couple (with four children) wanted ample seating so everyone could enjoy the high-performance private cinema.

PROJECT GOAL:
The client’s vision was to use the space primarily to watch movies together while being able to easily transition to catching the latest sporting events with friends. The theater also needed to provide all the amenities of a true cinema experience, including a candy case, popcorn machine, refrigerator, comfortable theater-style seating and 3D capabilities. We also worked very closely with the client on all interior finishes to make this a fun and exciting project for everyone involved.

RESULT:

We were able to deliver on all the client’s requests in a timely fashion, while maximizing the seating requirements to meet their needs. The room features a Vutec Automask H Horizontal masking screen and six zones of controlled lighting, which is all controlled by a small and powerful universal handheld remote.  A 1080p JVC projector with 3D capabilities compliments the screen. The room is outfitted with seventeen 2-inch engineered acoustic devices strategically placed and designed to optimize the sound quality. All of the speakers are located behind the columns or the acoustical panels for a very clean look. The cinema-quality concession area houses the equipment racks, candy case, a beverage center, and popcorn machine. Overall, the client is thrilled with the sound and video quality that this system produces during movies and high-definition content.

Converting an Unused Basement into a Knockout Room for the Ultimate UFC Fan

WHO:
The primary direction was to create a finished room “like no one else has” (within the confines of a strict space and budget) to share with family and friends.

PROJECT GOAL:
The objective was to turn a completely unfinished space (15’ x 18’, bare to the concrete) into a unique private cinema. The client had visited the Encore Custom A/V showroom and wanted something similar, but at a lower cost point. The task was to use our Virginia Class A state license to completely build the space out from a dark and empty basement. We pulled the permits, framed the area, installed the drywall, and finished the build out from the concrete slab up.

RESULT:

The completed build looks like a far more expensive room. It features a 110” acoustically-transparent masking screen with front speakers and two subwoofers installed behind it (for a seamless and non-intrusive look), eight acoustic panels, a Digital Projection M-Vision 260HC video projector with 3500 lumens with high contrast (housed within a hidden space in the back center column), Marantz receivers, Audyssey Pro Sound equalizers, and a Lutron GRAFIC Eye QS system.

With an X-Box 360 incorporated for game playing, the owner has multiple options to entertain up to 6 visitors in this distinctive, one-of-a-kind build out.

Proof that a Quality Home Theater Doesn’t Require an Astronomical Budget

WHO:
Family of 5 wanted to turn an underutilized space into a private cinema that could immediately transition into a video game and sporting event room.

PROJECT GOAL:
The objective was to maximize their budget while providing a fully-functional home theater for the friends of all three kids. The original design of the room was for theater use when it was built decades ago, but the family had converted the space to a music room (so the kids could practice drums in an isolated environment). A complete retrofit was required to capture many of the characteristics envisioned by the family.

RESULT:

The scope of work accomplished, when set against the client’s budget, more than fulfills the family’s entertainment needs for movies, games and more! The room features a 123” acoustically-transparent masking screen and a recessed JVC 4K-ready video projector with 3D capability. It’s optimized for sound quality with eight custom-designed acoustic panels. The bulkheads and soffits were designed to match the room décor, with four zones of lighting integrated into the ceiling (including within the beams themselves). The recessed rack is also notable, as the client feels it was a clever solution to utilize closet space that was adjacent to the theater.

The custom seating (for six) complement an overall entertainment space that invites both family and guests to experience films and games in a luxurious, user-friendly atmosphere.

Retrofit that made Unfamiliar Systems Work Together

WHO:
After a number of frustrating years dealing with an incomplete home automation system, the client family had a vision of easy control and use.

PROJECT GOAL:
The upgrade required an integration of systems that had not ever communicated, introducing new A/V & HVAC zones, and the design and engineering of a media room accessible from multiple points in the basement. The music distribution focused heavily on iTunes compatibility, and the clients wanted to keep the original furniture in the media room (but required a design that better utilized the space). We had to incorporate new technology through-out the home; upgrading and integrating a new network with user-friendly controls that emphasized audio and video distribution.

RESULT:

We centralized the AV control distribution, integrating 8 existing zones of audio with 6 zones of video and 12 zones of lights (inside and out). We did a complete overhaul of the media systems with the Crestron Gesture Driven app for local and global control. Multiple iPads were incorporated, as well as Mirage Media Server and AppleTV functions, plus a separate 5.1 surround sound system, custom LCR bar and custom, color-matched 10” bookshelf subwoofer in the family room. The LED projector featured the color saturation of a 3-chip model (and a lifetime bulb), so it can easily be enjoyed throughout the space. The centralization of the systems reduced all audio-video sources by half.

The final product surpassed the client’s highest expectation. After a number of frustrating years dealing with an incomplete home automation system, the client’s vision easy control and use was fulfilled at last. Even their 7-year old can command their automated home.

Safe space for the whole team

WHO:
Family of 5 wanted to turn the basement into a multi-game system HQ for the entire neighborhood.

PROJECT GOAL:
The objective was to repurpose the basement space (800 sqr ft) into a safe gaming haven/sports team retreat. This entailed gutting the entire room and remodeling the space from the slab up. After careful consideration, the homeowners decided they wanted separate areas in a common space, with a divider counter in the middle so either section could expand seating options.

RESULT:

Kids can play multiplayer games against their brothers and friends, who are merely on the other side of the room (but playing on a different monitor and separate game unit). The choices for viewing include one 65” flat panel, a 55” flat panel and two 40” TVs. In addition, the entire room is controlled by Crestron Pro2 (with a Crestron DM Zone Matrix switcher), with iPad minis housed in the wall via magnets, and the choice of AppleTV, Blu-ray or standard cable (so they can watch any system in either part of the room at any time). The space also has two light models (with 12 zones), two surround sound systems, four custom acoustic panels, and a Mirage Media Server for a single distributed audio zone.

Luxury theater seating allows for 6-8 kids to relax in either section at any time, in addition to the four stools at the counter (bringing the total capacity to 20). Now the entire junior varsity football team can huddle to review game footage and strategize their next challenge, or the neighborhood kids can get together for a video game tournament with intense and realistic audio and video playback. So user-friendly, a 10-year old can start the system and find an age-appropriate movie…and does so now frequently.

AV Integration during Construction

WHO:
A new home build, our responsibility to the builder and the family was turnkey control at the time of completion.

PROJECT GOAL:
The integration included whole-house distributed music, HVAC integration, security integration, six rooms of distributed video, and eight rooms of distributed audio (including their outside patio).

RESULT:

There was very little space in which we could incorporate a rack and electrical system so, when we completed the media room, we custom framed the rack closet with louvered doors for easy access and ventilation. We also centralized the AV control distribution, integrating the distributed audio and video with a user-friendly OS platform (Crestron Gesture Driven app) for local and global control. Multiple iPads were incorporated, as well as a Mirage Media Server and AppleTV functions (and two surround sound systems).

After months of delay (during a historically-bad winter), our outstanding staff implemented the entire system in a single week. They even tested and built the rack offsite when winter conditions prevented us from being on site. The client was ecstatic with the results, and we proved (once again) that we will exceed all expectations when called.

Combination Family Theater & Man Cave

WHO:
Client couple (with three daughters) wanted to retrofit an access area so it had the “feel” of an isolated room.

PROJECT GOAL:
The primary objective was to turn an underutilized (13’ x 22’) space in the home into a theater/dad retreat combo. The real challenge came from taking an open room that wasn’t designed to be an isolated theater and crafting a home cinema within the space.   The client also requested a lounge feeling to the forward seating.

RESULT:
The finished room includes a 123” automated screen with masking, 6 zones of Crestron lighting and two automated Crestron blackout shades. 14 custom acoustic panels were used along with a framed soffit (including custom beams with crown molding). The Crestron Gesture Driven app allows the room to be controlled from an iPad, while we used a finished closet behind the room to access and house the 4K/3D Projector. Lastly, our firm incorporated a custom pocket door to close off the room to the rest of the house for the feel of a true, isolated theater.

The completed build demonstrates that our clients can request a home theater virtually anywhere, and we can (and will) accommodate.
